JACKSON, Tenn. - Union University has captured the
TranSouth Conference All-Sports Trophy for
the 2005-06 season. This trophy is presented to the athletic
department with the highest average based on their
team's finish in the regular season of each of the league's 13
sports. If a sport didn't produce regular season standings, then
the tournament results were counted.
For Union, this marked the third straight season for winning the All-Sports Trophy.
In 2005-06, Union scored a 4.625 average to lead the
way. Union won four sport championships on the
season (men's basketball, men's golf, men's and women's cross
country), however, only two counted towards the points average.
The two cross country titles didn't count in the total because a sport
must have at least four teams to be considered in the All Sports
standings. Union also boasted three runner-up finishes and one
third place finish on the season.
Closing the year in a very close second was Trevecca Nazarene at
4.500 who finished behind Union by just 0.125 in the average.
Trevecca Nazarene boasted three titles on the year (men's
basketball, softball, and women's golf) of which women's golf didn't
count towards the total as the sport didn't meet the four-team
minimum. The Trojans also posted two runner-up finishes on
the year.
Finishing third was Cumberland at 4.200, fourth was Martin Methodist at
4.050, fifth was Freed-Hardeman at 4.000, and sixth was Lyon at
2.722. Crichton and Blue Mountain did not meet the minimum of six
participating sports to qualify for the All-Sports Trophy.
