NASHVILLE, Tenn – The TranSouth Athletic Conference has released its weekly volleyball honors for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007.
Karina Souza of Freed-Hardeman was selected as the Player of the Week, Bethel College’s Michele Cunha was selected as the Libero of the Week and Jennifer Martins of Union University was chosen as the Setter of the Week.
Cunha was also honored with the Libero of the Week honor at the NAIA Region XI level.
Souza, a 5-9, senior outside hitter from the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, led Freed-Hardeman (23-1) to an undefeated 2-0 week, with wins over Lyon College and Trevecca Nazarene. Souza earned 18 kills, 40 digs and six aces during a successful week for the Lady Lions, despite nursing a back injury.
Cunha, a 5-7, sophomore libero from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, pushed Bethel to a win over Mid-Continent and played well in a loss to Martin Methodist, notching 36 digs. Cunha earned 58 digs (9.7 per game) total, notched six aces and had a .983 reception percentage for the week.
Martins, a 5-7, junior setter from Mississouga, Ontario, Canada, helped lead the Lady Bulldogs (15-5) to an undefeated 2-0 week with victories over Lyon College and Lambuth University. Martins had 95 assists (11.9 per game), 22 digs and five aces this week.
