OLATHE, Kan. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced its selections for the 2007 NAIA Women's Soccer All-American teams, as selected by the NAIA Women's Soccer All-American Selection Committee. Defender Marcia Silva of Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) earned the Brine-NAIA Player of the Year honor for 2007.
Also making the NAIA All-American first team from the TranSouth was Lisa Mann of Martin Methodist. Sarah Prendergast, Victoria Charnley, Clare Sykes, and Shannon Walter of Martin Methodist were selected to the second team. Philisha Lewis (Bethel), Leah O'Grady (Bethel), and Caitlin Zimmerman (Union) were named to the NAIA All-American honorable mention list.
Silva, a Valinhos, Brazil native, started all 23 of her potential matches she this season scoring two goals. She helped lead the defense this season and as a result the RedHawks had 15 shutouts. Opposing teams only scored 13 goals against the RedHawks this season. Silva was selected to the TranSouth All-Conference Team, Region XI First Team, National Tournament MVP, and First Team NAIA All-American.
“Marcia is a solid defender with the talent of been able to play. She is a great link up between our defenders and midfielders. Athletically she is one of the strongest soccer players in the NAIA. She could play at any soccer level in America. The good news is that she has one more year to play for us,” commented head coach Gerry Cleary.
Marcia was a member of the 2007 National Championship team who defeated Azusa Pacific in the finals 2-1. This was the RedHawks second National Championship in three years. They also won the TranSouth Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament Title as well as the Region XI Tournament Title.
