HENDERSON, Tenn. - Shannon Walter of Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College and Laura Pla of Union (Tenn.) University have been named the TranSouth Athletic Conference's women's soccer players of the week for the week ending Aug. 30, 2008.
Walter, a junior forward from Chicago, Ill., earned offensive player of the week honors after leading the NAIA No. 1 Martin Methodist College Redhawks to wins over the Illinois Institute of Technology and Northwood (Texas) University. In a 5-0 win over IIT, Walter scored two goals and assisted on another; in a 3-1 win over Northwood, she added another assist to bring her point total for the week to six as MMC opened the season with a 2-0 record.
Pla, a junior goalkeeper from Nashville, Tenn., was selected as the conference's defensive player of the week after playing a key part in Union's season-opening win over Southeastern (Fla.) College by recording five saves in a 3-0 shutout. The Lady Bulldogs are now 1-1 on the year.
