HENDERSON, Tenn. - Angela Sheehan of Cumberland (Tenn.) University and Gabriela De Melo of Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College have been named the TranSouth Athletic Conference's women's soccer offensive and defensive players of the week respectively for the week ending Sept. 28, 2008.
Sheehan, a senior midfielder from Bradenton, Fla., scored four of
Cumberland's seven goals and added two assists as the Lady Bulldogs
went 1-0-1 on the week.
Sheehan scored twice in a 3-3 tie against Campbellsville (Ky.) University, including the game-tying goal late in regulation. She later played a part in every goal in a 4-0 win over Crichton (Tenn.) College, scoring two goals and assisting on the other two. Cumberland is 4-3-1 on the season.
De Melo, a freshman defender from Sao Paola, Brazil, led a Martin Methodist defense that posted clean sheets against two of the top teams in the conference in a 2-0 win over Bethel (Tenn.) College and a 1-0 win over Lyon (Ark.) College.
Both opponents were receiving votes in the national poll. The RedHawk defense allowed just eight shots, three on goal, in the two victories.
Martin Methodist, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, is 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
