JACKSON, Tenn. - Leo Alvaraz of Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University and Ben Johnson of Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University have been named the TranSouth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 22, 2009.
Alvarez, a 5-foot-10 senior catcher from Miami, Fla., helped the Lions of Freed-Hardeman to a 4-1 week, with two wins over Union (Tenn.) and two wins over Martin Methodist (Tenn.). On the week, Alvarez hit .500 (9-18) with eight RBI, four doubles, and two runs scores. He also recorded two walks, stole a base, and posted a slugging percentage of .722. Defensively, Alverez threw out 2-of-4 base runners from behind the plate. In Freed-Hardeman's 7-5 win at Martin Methodist, he drove in the game-winning run. Freed-Hardeman is now 15-8 on the season and 5-3 in the TranSouth Conference.
Johnson, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Nashville, Tenn., picked up a win in two appearances on the week for the Trojans, who posted a 3-2 record as a team. In 6 2/3 innings of work, Johnson did not allow a run and gave up just two hits. He earned the win against No. 2 Lee University, tossing five innings of one hit baseball while walking five and striking out eight. He also pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief against RV Lambuth University, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two batters. The Trojans are now 18-12 on the year and lead the TranSouth with a 5-1 league record.
