University swept the TranSouth Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week honors
for the week ending March 21, 2010. Matt Greener was named the player of the week,
while teammate Shawn Schaefer was named the pitcher of the week. Schaefer was also named the NAIA Pitcher of the Week.
This is Schaefer's third conference pitcher
of the week honor this year and Greener's second player of the week honor.
Greener, a 5-foot-10 senior from
Jupiter, Fla., helped No. 19 Cumberland to a 5-1 week, including 2-of-3 wins
against No. 6 Embry-Riddle (Fla.). Greener hit .571 on the week with six runs,
two doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI. In the 3-game set with Embry-Riddle,
he was 5-for-10 with three RBI. Greener recorded at least one hit in all six
games and at least one RBI in five of the six games. He added two walks and
posted a 1.095 slugging percentage. Cumberland is now 21-6 overall.
Schaefer, a 5-foot-11 senior
left-hander from Pit Meadows, British Columbia, posted two complete game
victories on the week. He was 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings of work. Schaefer
tossed a nine inning complete game in a win over No. 6 Embry-Riddle (Fla.). He
allowed just one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out 12 hitters.
Later in the week, Schaefer added a five inning complete game win over
Davenport. He allowed just one hit and struck out six in the shutout. For the
week, Schaefer allowed five hits, one run, one walk and struck out 18 hitters
in 14 innings of work. He is 5-0 on the season, helping No. 19 Cumberland to a
21-6 overall record.
TranSouth Conference player begins
this coming weekend. The opening weekend includes No. 19 Cumberland at (RV)
Union (Tenn.), (RV) Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) at Bethel (Tenn.), Freed-Hardeman
(Tenn.) at Mid-Continent (Ky.), Martin Methodist (Tenn.) at Lyon (Ark.).
