NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The TranSouth Athletic Conference announces its 10-member 2011 TranSouth Women's Basketball All-Preseason team. The team, voted on by league coaches, is highlighted by Union University's Lavanda Ross as the 2011 Preseason TranSouth Player of the Year.
Ross edged Vee Young of Martin Methodist and Natalie Shumpert of Freed-Hardeman by seven and eight votes respectively as the preseason POY.
Union, Bethel University, and Freed-Hardeman University each had two players make the preseason all-conference team.
The rest of the 2011 preseason team includes Molly Wallsmith and Jana Roney of Bethel University, Casie Cowan of Cumberland University, Lauren Ramsey of Lyon College, Hannah Parsley of Freed-Hardeman, Shelby Ashcraft of Union, and Stephanie Malone of Mid-Continent University.
Ross, a 5-foot eight senior from Jackson, Tenn., helped lead the Bulldogs to within a game of another NAIA National Championship. Ross was a first team NAIA All-American last season and was an honorable mention selection as a sophomore. In the 2010-2011 season Ross averaged 14.4 points per game and shot 41.5% from beyond the three-point arch.
Young, a 6-foot one senior forward from Pulaski, Tenn., averaged 20 points and nine rebounds last season for the RedHawks. Young was a third-team NAIA All-American last season.
Shumpert, a 5-foot four junior guard from Paducah, Ky., averaged 15.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season. Shumpert was named to the third-team NAIA All-American team following her sophomore season. 2011 TranSouth Women's BasketballPreseason All-Conference Team
