NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The TranSouth Athletic Conference announced its 2012 women's basketball postseason awards Monday, highlighted by Natalie Shumpert of Freed-Hardeman University selection as the 2012 TranSouth Player of the Year.

Three players shared the 2012 TranSouth Newcomer of the Year award. Shelby Ashcraft (Union), Ashley Tate (Freed-Hardeman), and Jasmine Taylor (Bethel) all received the same number of votes.
 
The 2012 Defensive Player of the Year went to LaTesa McLaughlin of Union University. Amy Philamlee of Union University was named the 2012 TranSouth Freshman of the Year. Dale Neal of Freed-Hardeman was voted the 2012 TranSouth Coach of the Year.


First-team and second-team All-TranSouth honorees, All-Freshman team, along with the player, coach, defender, and freshman of the year, were chosen by the league's eight coaches.

Shumpert, a five-foot-four guard from Paducah, Ky., averaged 15.6 points, 2.4 steals, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 37% from the field, 32% from three-point range, and 73% from the foul line.

McLaughlin, a five-foot-five sophomore guard from Millington, Tenn., averaged 2.1 steals and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Philamlee, a five-foot-five freshman guard from Jonesboro, Ark., averaged 9.7 points, 2.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 43% from the field, 38% from three point range, and 86% from the foul line.

Taylor, a five-foot-ten junior forward from Memphis, Tenn. Averaged 11.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Ashcraft, a six-foot sophomore forward from Cabot, Ark., averaged 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Tate, a five-foot-six junior guard from Memphis, Tenn., averaged six points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.

Dale Neal led his team to the runner-up finish in the regular season race while picking up his 700th win this season.
