Cole Floyd
of Union University won the 2006 NAIA Region XI Golf Tournament and
helped lead the TranSouth Champion Union Bulldogs to a third place
Region XI finish. With his win, Floyd earned an automatic bid to the
NAIA National Golf Tournament on May 16-19 in Kansas as an individual
qualifier. The Bulldogs are on the bubble for at at-large bid to the
national tournament. There were nine teams and 44 individual golfers in
this year's event. The teams played 36 holes during Monday's opening
round and finished with 18 holes on Tuesday.
Lindsey Wilson College, Ky. (288-300-282) took home the team honors
with an 870 (+18). Campbellsville University, Ky. (296-300-292)
finished second at 880. In third was Union University, Tenn.
(293-303-292) at 891 after sitting in the fourth spot through two
rounds. Cumberland University, Tenn. (299-296-306) finished the day in
fourth with a 901. University of the Cumberlands, Ky. (307-299-298)
finished fifth at 904 and Georgetown College, Ky. (308-299-312)
finished in sixth with a 919. Trevecca Nazarene, Tenn. (312-317-312)
came in seventh at 941. Martin Methodist, Tenn. (321-311-319) finished
at 319 and Pikeville College (335-334-335) finished ninth at 1004. Lyon
College did not participate.
Individually Cole Floyd of Union led the way with a combined score of
and was awarded the medalist honors. Carlos Navarro and Tyler Sharpe of
Lindsey Wilson tied for second place with a score of 215. Phillip Wolfe
of Campbellsville (218), Federico Lizarralde of Lindsey Wilson (220),
Mike Shinn of Cumberland (220), Scott Webb of Campbellsville (220), and
Zack Wilson of Lindsey Wilson (220) all made the All-Region XI Team.
Floyd, a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Milan, Tennessee, led after two rounds
and then promptly fired a one under 70 to record a three day total of
(70-71-70) 211 (-2) to win by four shots. This win marked Floyd's first
tournament title of the year, after posting two second place finishes
this season.
Floyd's appearance in the NAIA National Tournament will be the first
appearance, team or individual, for Union since the 1998 season.
Trevecca’s Robbie Wilson shot a combined 228 (72-78-78) finishing 19th
out of 44 individuals golfers. Will Scism finished in 25th with a
combined scored of 231 (76-78-77). Tyler Qualls finished the tournament
at 238 (84-81-73) and David King shot a 244 (80-80-84). Josh Fields
finished at 276 (94-90-92).
