NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The TranSouth Athletic Conference released the 2008-2009 men's basketball all-conference team and postseason awards. Union, who won the regular season title with an 14-2 record, claimed two of the top awards, while Freed-Hardeman and Trevecca each picked up one of the four major awards. Matt Neaville of Union University was tipped as the Player of the Year, Greg Truvillion, also of Union, was selected as the Newcomer of the Year. Michael France of Trevecca Nazarene was named the Freshman of the Year, and Jason Shelton was voted the Coach of the Year.
Matt Neaville, a 6'0" senior from Urbana, Ill., has been named the TranSouth Player of the Week twice this season. He led the NAIA in scoring a year ago. He was the conference Newcomer of the Year last year. Neaville has averaged 17.2 points per game while finishing second in assists with 111. He has shot 38% from three-point range and has hit 110 three pointers this season. He ranks third in the NAIA with 3.7 made three pointers per game.
Greg Truvillion, a 6'8" junior from Lansing, Mich., is leading the Bulldogs in scoring. He has been named the conference player of the week five times and was once named the NAIA Player of the Week. Truvillion has averaged 17.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game this season. He is shooting 59% from the field this season. He is ranked No. 11 in the NAIA in field goal percentage and No. 13 in Total Rebounds per game.
Michael France, a 6'2" guard from Shelbyville, Tenn., was named the TranSouth Player of the Week once this season. France has averaged 9.9 points per game this season and is shooting 44.6% from three-point range. He has hit 33 three-point field goals this season. He has had four games with more than 20 points and one double-double. In conference play he has averaged 10.9 points per game.
Jason Shelton, in his fourth season at Freed-Hardeman, has led the Lions to their first national ranking since 2003. FHU also set a program record for most conference wins in a season with 13. The team's 22 wins thus far this season is the most the program has seen since 2003, when the Lions won 23 games.
In his first two seasons at FHU, Shelton's teams went a combined 20-44. In the last two seasons, he has guided the Lions to 42 wins against only 19 losses.
