Mayfield, KY - Mid-Continent University men's soccer coach Joe Zakowicz has resigned his head men's soccer coaching position, effective at the end of the 2009 soccer season, and plans to focus his efforts on his duties as MCU's Associate Vice-President for Advancement, which include fundraising and grant proposal writing.

Coach Zakowicz is completing his tenth season as the Cougars' head soccer coach. With a 6-4-4 record so far this season, MCU plays one more regular-season and conference match, Nov. 3, at Martin Methodist College, and already has qualified for the TranSouth Athletics Conference Tournament which begins Nov. 7. His record at MCU is 142-60-18, including the current 2009 record, and his career record is 192-100-19, which includes 11 seasons as a collegiate men's soccer coach and four seasons as a collegiate women's soccer coach.

Under Zakowicz's guidance, Mid-Continent has appeared in the NAIA National Tournament twice and the NCCAA National Tournament five times and won the 2005 NCCAA National championship and the 2001 and 2008 Mideast Region championships. He was honored as NCCAA Mideast Region Coach of the Year in 2008, and was named KIAC and NCCAA Mid-South Region Coach of the Year in 2005, when he guided the Cougars to the NCCAA National Championship and KIAC regular season and tournament titles. In 2007, Zakowicz was named NSCAA Coach of the Year and NAIA Region XI Coach of the Year after leading MCU to the NAIA Region XI championship and into the NAIA national quarterfinals.

Zakowicz's Cougars have won five KIAC regular-season championships, three KIAC Tournament championships, one TranSouth regular-season title, and two TranSouth Tournament championships.
