New MCU soccer coach David Oesch
MAYFIELD, Ky. - Mid-Continent University athletics director Larry Lampkins announces that David Oesch is the Cougars' new head men's soccer coach.
"We are glad that Coach Oesch has chosen to join our staff and has the experience and ability. He is a very good coach and an even better family man, and I am looking forward to working with him," says Lampkins.
Oesch leaves Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma after coaching its men's and women's soccer teams in 2007 and 2008 and its men's team only in 2009. He also established the first junior varsity men's soccer program at Bacone in 2009.
In 2007, Oesch's first season of coaching Bacone's women's soccer, his 12-player squad defeated the conference's number one team and proceeded to the conference championship match and posted a 7-7-2 record.
Oesch began his soccer career at North Side High School in Jackson, Tennessee where he scored a record 36 goals in his senior year and led his team to a 17-2-1 record and the first District championship in school history. Oesch was named West Tennessee's Most Valuable Player as a senior in 2003.
Oesch also was the first player from Jackson to make the Olympic Development State team in 2002. He also captained his U15, U16 and U17 teams with the Jackson Soccer Club until he joined the elite Memphis Futbol Club under the direction of Richard Bute in 2002-03.
From Jackson, Oesch made his way to Mars Hill College in North Carolina, an NCAA Division II school where he became a four-year starter from 2003-2007, led the team in goals as a freshman, served as team chaplain as a junior and senior and earned All-Conference Academic Honor Roll awards for four consecutive years.
During the summers of 2004 and 2005, Oesch founded and directed the Jackson Area Soccer Improvement Program (JASIP), training and coaching small groups of players to improve their technical, tactical and physical skills and increase their overall knowledge of soccer. JASIP has produced 15 student-athletes who advanced to the club level and have been recruited to play at the college level.
Coach Oesch met his wife, the former Erica Kishlar, while attending college in North Carolina. The Oesches are relative newlyweds and are making the move to the western Kentucky in order to assume his new position on February 8, replacing Joe Zakowicz, who completed 10 seasons as Mid-Continent's soccer coach with a record of 142-64-19. MCU won two TranSouth tournament titles and three KIAC tournament titles under Zakowicz, who resigned as head coach in November, 2009.
