JACKSON, Tenn. - Cumberland (Tenn.) University's Sam Kikla and Union (Tenn.) University's Derek Copley have been named the TranSouth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for the week ending May 2, 2010.
Kikla, a 6-foot-3 senior shortstop from Malabar, Florida, helped the No. 2 ranked Cumberland Bulldogs to a 4-0 week. Cumberland swept Milligan (Tenn.) and conference foe (RV) Lyon (Ark.) in a pair of double-headers. Kikla hit .692 (9-13) with 10 runs, one double, one triple, four home runs and 10 RBI.
He also added two walks, stole a base and posted a 1.846 slugging percentage. Kikla posted at least two hits and two RBI in all four games, while scoring at least one run in all four games. In the second game of a double-header against Milligan, Kikla tied the game twice with a triple in the seventh and a home run in the 12th. He is now batting .391 with 10 doubles, 13 home runs, 56 RBI, 70 runs scored and 32 walks and has been hit 14 times this season. Cumberland is 43-8 overall and 14-2 in the TranSouth.
Copley, a 6-foot-3 junior from Dyer, Tenn., posted a 1-0 record on the week. Copley helped Union keep their grip on second place in the TranSouth with a 10-2 victory at conference foe Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.). Copley tossed a complete game allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. He kept the Trojans off the scoreboard in six of the seven innings. Copley is now 8-1 with one save on the season. He has a 3.08 ERA in 64.1 innings pitched. Union, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, is 34-13 on the season and is in second place in the league with an 11-5 conference record.
Cumberland has wrapped up their second straight regular season title going into the final weekend of the season. Cumberland (14-2) travels to Mid-Continent (3-15), Union (11-5) is in second place and will host third place Freed-Hardeman (9-9), Bethel (8-9) travels to Lyon (8-9), while Martin Methodist (8-9) will host Trevecca Nazarene (7-10). The games this week will be played on Thursday and Friday with the conference tournament starting on Monday, May 10.
The last week's NAIA ranking, Cumberland was No. 2, Union was No. 20 and Lyon is receiving votes.
