2005 TranSouth Athletic Conference

Volleyball Tournament

The TranSouth Conference Tournament was held last weekend in Henderson, Tenn. and Union University captured the tournament championship. Union's Gladys Wandera was named the tournament's MVP.
During the opening round of the tournament, the 2004 Post Season honors were released for the conference. Union's Brian Dunn was named Coach of the Year, Gladys Wandera of Union was named the Player of the Year, Karina Souza of Freed-Hardeman was named the Freshman of the Year, and Martin Methodist's Fabiola Nepomuneno was named the Newcomer of the Year.
The volleyball season has moved on the NAIA Region XI Tournament which is this weekend in Louisville, Kentucky (Nov. 19-20). Union University, Freed-Hardeman University, and Martin Methodist College have moved on to represent the conference at the region tournament. Freed-Hardeman, the No. 4 seed, will play No. 5 Cumberland College (Ky.) at 6:00 pm on Friday. The No. 6 seeded Martin Methodist College RedHawks will play the No. 3 seed, Campbellsville University, at 8:00 pm on Friday. Union, the No. 2 seed, earns a bye and will play on Saturday at 1:00 pm versus the winner of the Martin Methodist/Campbellsville match. The Championship match for this single elimination tournament will be at 4:00 pm on Saturday.

In the final NAIA National Volleyball Poll, Union sits at the No. 14 spot entering the region tournaments. Because of our region's success this season, there are two scenarios sent down by the NAIA that would allow the runner-up team from the Region XI Tournament to earn an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament. Hope still remains for three teams to advance to the nationals. The region champion will earn a spot in the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament scheduled for Dec. 1-4 in San Diego, California. Should either of the two scenarios be used, the runner-up team from our region will earn an at-large bid to nationals.
