TranSouth Sports Weekly Update
September 22, 2004

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - In a limited schedule for the men's cross country teams, Lyon College and Cumberland University were the only two teams to run this past week. Lyon competed at the Orange Crush Invitational in Conway, Arkansas this past weekend. The Lyon men placed 4th of 6 teams. Daniel Haney, a freshman, placed 10th overall with a time of 28:23. In the race, Lyon was the only NAIA school among NCAA II teams. Cumberland ran in the Western Kentucky Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky. The Bulldogs had no team result, but had two players complete the event.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Like the men, the women's cross country schedule for the week was limited to Lyon and Cumberland. The Lyon College Pipers finished 6th of 7 teams. In the race, Lyon was the only NAIA school among NCAA II teams. Cumberland had no team result in the Western Kentucky Invitational; however, the Lady Bulldogs had two runners complete the event.

MEN'S SOCCER - In men's soccer, Martin Methodist moved into the NAIA Top 25 this week at the No. 23 spot. Cumberland University fell out of the polls, after receiving votes last week. Martin Methodist and Cumberland (Tenn.) are ranked No. 2 and No. 4 respectively in the NAIA Region XI Top 5 rankings. Neale Phelan, of Martin Methodist College, was named the TranSouth Conference and NAIA Region XI Player of the Week.

WOMEN'S SOCCER -Martin Methodist RedHawks dropped from No. 7 to No. 12 in this week's NAIA National Polls, and still remain the only conference women's soccer team in the polls. Martin Methodist and Cumberland (Tenn.) are ranked No. 2 and No. 7 in the NAIA Region XI rankings respectively. Kelsey Shockey, of Trevecca Nazarene University was named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Week.

VOLLEYBALL - Union University remained steady at No. 23 in the NAIA Top 25 rankings. The Lady Bulldogs of Union are ranked No. 2 in the NAIA Region XI rankings, while Martin Methodist and Freed-Hardeman come in at No. 4 and No. 7 respectively. Fabiana Lima, of Martin Methodist College, was named the TranSouth Conference and NAIA Region XI Player of the Week. Cheri Kull of Freed-Hardeman University and Susie Harper, of Lyon College, were named the TranSouth Conference Setter and Libero of the Week respectively.
