2004 Women's Soccer Championship

The Martin Methodist women’s soccer team won the 2004 TSAC Championship with a 7-0 victory over Cumberland Wednesday.

The RedHawks scored four goals in the first half and added three in the second half to help secure the Martin Methodist victory, marking the school’s first-ever conference championship for any women’s sport. The RedHawks were led by Asuka Kubota with a hat trick and an assist, Kelly Lewicki with two goals and Harumi Someya with a goal and three assists.

“This team was hungry after losing in the finals last year,” commented Head Coach Gerry Cleary. “The girls played their hearts out and they continue reaching the goals we set at the beginning of this season. I told the girls that we are here to set traditions and I think we are well on our way to doing that.”

Martin Methodist secured the TranSouth Athletic Conference regular season title with a 4-0 victory over Cumberland on October 27. A total of nine RedHawks earned spots on the All-Conference Teams.

Freshman Asuka Kubota was named TSAC Player of the Year. She has recorded 17 goals and 21 assists in 13 games so far this season. With Kubota’s one assist in Wednesday’s game, she becomes the RedHawk’s all-time assist leader for a season with 21.

Freshman Amanda Johansson was named TSAC Freshman of the Year. In the RedHawk’s 17 games so far this season Amanda has scored 20 goals and 10 assists.

Coach Gerry Cleary was honored as the TSAC Coach of the Year. Under Coach Cleary’s leadership the RedHawks have an impressive 14-2-1 record and went undefeated through the TranSouth Conference.
