PULASKI, Tenn. The Martin Methodist
womens soccer team continued their most successful season
Wednesday afternoon on the colleges East Campus. The
RedHawks, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, defeated Cumberland University
7-0 in the finals of the TranSouth Conference Tournament.

The RedHawks scored four goals in the first
half and added three in the second half to help secure the Martin
Methodist victory, marking the schools first-ever conference
championship for any womens sport. The RedHawks were led by
Asuka Kubota with a hat trick and an assist, Kelly Lewicki with
two goals and Harumi Someya with a goal and three assists.
This team was hungry after
losing in the finals last year, commented Head Coach Gerry
Cleary. The girls played their hearts out and they continue
reaching the goals we set at the beginning of this season. I told
the girls that we are here to set traditions and I think we are
well on our way to doing that.
Martin Methodist secured the TranSouth Athletic
Conference regular season title with a 4-0 victory over Cumberland
on October 27. A total of nine RedHawks earned spots on the
All-Conference Teams.
Freshman Asuka Kubota was named TSAC Player of
the Year. She has recorded 17 goals and 21 assists in 13 games so
far this season. With Kubotas one assist in Wednesdays
game, she becomes the RedHawks all-time assist leader for a
season with 21.
Freshman Amanda Johansson was named TSAC
Freshman of the Year. In the RedHawks 17 games so far this
season Amanda has scored 20 goals and 10 assists.
Coach Gerry Cleary was honored as the TSAC
Coach of the Year. Under Coach Clearys leadership the
RedHawks have an impressive 14-2-1 record and went undefeated
through the TranSouth Conference.
The RedHawks named First-Team All-Conference
picks included Kubota, Johansson, Sophomores Kelly Lewicki and
Johanna Botold, and Freshmen Harumi Someya, Clare Sykes, and
Victoria Charnley.
Two more RedHawks were named Second Team
All-Conference. Sophomore Rachel Sharp and Freshman Chiaki
Ishihara were included on this list. |
