TSAC Softball Championship Tournament: Day Two Summaries

TROJAN SOFTBALL COMPLEX - Trevecca will host championship day for the TranSouth Athletic Conference on Friday. Trevecca will play Union at 10 a.m. and the winner of that game will face Martin Methodist at 12:15 p.m. Martin is undefeated in the tournament and would only need one win for the title. Union or Trevecca will arrive in the title game with a loss and would need to beat Martin Methodist in consecutive games for the title.

#3 RedHawks Advance to Finals With Extra Inning Win Box Score
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 3 Martin Methodist RedHawks (42-10) defeated No. 4 Freed-Hardeman (23-15) by a final score of 2-1 in eight innings of play to advance to the TranSouth Conference Softball Tournament Championship game.

The RedHawks grabbed an early 1-0 lead on an Ashley Altman RBI double in the bottom of the first. In the final inning of regulation, Freed-Hardeman tied the game when pitcher Cassie Smith launched a solo home run to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Smith fielded a grounder but threw the ball over the first baseman's head to allow the winning run to score from third and give Martin Methodist the 2-1 victory.

Martin Methodist's Liz Adams (14-2) got the complete game win giving up one earned run and six hits and two strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Freed-Hardeman's Smith (11-9) took the loss going seventh and one-third innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on 11 hits and striking out eight.

Becky Grayson, Martin Methodist's second baseman, went 2-for-3 on the day while Freed-Hardeman's April Clayton batted 3-for-4 with a double in the losing effort. Martin Methodist scored two runs on 11 hits and played errorless ball while Freed-Hardeman managed one run on six hits and committed three errors.

With the win, No. 3 Martin Methodists advances to the TranSouth Conference Championship game to be played Friday at 12:15 p.m. No. 4 Freed-Hardeman falls to the loser's bracket and will face #1 Trevecca today at 4:00 p.m.

#2 Union Eliminates #5 Cumberland Box Score
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Second seeded Union University (39-12-1) eliminated fifth seeded Cumberland University (8-32-1) Thursday afternoon with a 10-2 win in day two of the TranSouth Conference Tournament.

Union wasted no time by loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning before third baseman Jessica Kee hit a grand slam to take a 4-0 lead after one inning. Union added one more run in the bottom of the third inning on a Chrissa Norton solo home run. Cumberland got on the board with a two run fourth inning including a Daniel Taylor RBI double to make it a 5-2 ball game. Union answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, Union first baseman Danielle Pope ended the game with a three run home run to enforce the 8-run rule and give Union the 10-2 victory.

Union's Mary Kosco (22-7) earned the win pitching shutout ball and giving up only three hits and striking out five in three innings of work. Chrissa Norton relieved Kosco in the fourth inning and gave up two runs (both earned) on three hits and struck out five. Cumberland's Sarah Sparks took the loss giving up 5 runs (all earned) while striking out five. Cecilia Kemp relieved Sparks in the fourth inning and also gave up five runs (all earned).

Union's Danielle Pope hit 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, a home run, and two walks while teammate Chrissa Norton batted 2-for-2 with a walk, one run scored, two RBI, and a home run. Cumberland's Danielle Taylor went 1-for-1 with a walk and an RBI double.

With the win, No. 2 Union University advances to the TranSouth Conference Semi-Finals to face No. 1 Trevecca Nazarene University Thursday at 10:00 a.m. The loss eliminates Cumberland from the TranSouth Conference Tournament and ends their season at 8-32-1.

#1 Trevecca in Semi-Final with win over #4 Freed-Hardeman Box Score
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Day two of the TranSouth Conference Tournament ended with No. 1 Trevecca eliminating No. 4 Freed-Hardeman with a 4-3 win to advance to the Semi-Final Round.

After a triple from Trevecca's Evyn Terry in the top of the third inning, Laura Redmon's RBI single gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Freed-Hardeman answered in the bottom half of their inning with a two run home run off the bat of Brittany Johnson to take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the sixth inning, Redmon came through again with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Trevecca took the lead in the final inning when Terry's sacrifice fly scored Lindsey Howard. The rally continued when a two out error allowed Diana Eckert to score to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead. Freed-Hardeman attempted a final inning comeback when Jacqueline Stinson homered to bring the lead to within one. Trevecca stopped the rally, however and took the 4-3 victory.

Trevecca's Hollie Shane (29-4) got the complete game win giving up three runs (all earned) on three hits and striking out six. Freed-Hardeman's Adrienne Gann (14-6) took the complet e game loss giving up four runs (three earned) on 12 hits and striking out one.

Trojan shortstop Laura Redmon led Trevecca batting 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a stolen base. Freed-Hardeman's Brittany Johnson was 2-for-3 with a run, two RBI, and a home run.

Trevecca scored four runs on 12 hits and played errorless ball while Freed-Hardeman scored three runs on three hits and committed one error.

No. 1 Trevecca advances to the TranSouth Conference Tournament Semi-Final Round to face No. 2 Union University Friday at 10:00 a.m. With the loss, No. 4 Freed-Hardeman is eliminated from the conference tournament.
