Union University offers athletic
competition in nine varsity sports, including men's and
women's cross country, women's volleyball, men's soccer, men's
and women's basketball, baseball, softball and men's golf.
Union also offers a junior varsity men's soccer team. The
university competes in the TranSouth Conference as a member of
the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Over the years, Union University has developed a reputation
for being among the top sports programs in not only the
TranSouth Conference, but throughout the entire NAIA.
The university captured its first NAIA
National Championship with the Division I Women's Basketball
National Championship in 1998. During Union's time with dual
membership in the National Christian College Athletic
Association (NCCAA), Union won the NCCAA National
Championships in softball (2001, 2002, 2004), volleyball
(2003), and men's soccer (2003).
Dr. David Blackstock, director of
athletics, is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame with over 500
career coaching victories, including a women's basketball
national championship in 1998. Several coaches are among the
most successful in their respective sports and are rewarded by
being given numerous leadership roles not only at Union, but
throughout the conference and nation.
Because of great support from alumni,
boosters, and friends of the university, Union has been able
to build superb athletic facilities. The most recent was the
addition of Fesmire Fields completed in 1998, a lighted
baseball and softball complex, which has allows Union to be
the host for conference and regional tournaments year after
year. Union also has a lighted soccer field and a 2,200 seat
gymnasium that provides one of the best home court atmospheres
for basketball anywhere around. |
